"Wendy Averill Talks about Jinx"
Averill: She was a unique person. And so when I met her, here she is in a black jacket, red lining on the inside, black leather pants and black leather jacket, and these dark glasses, and black boots. And that was Jinx. This is who she was.
And I think part of it was, that she knew that she was going to get comments about her being a lesbian. She’d go into the bathroom and people would say to her, “Oh no there’s no men allowed in here.” [laughter] She was female, and so she thought, I’m just going to beat them to the punch and maybe look a little tough.
She played catcher for the lesbian softball leagues. It was great fun. And I remember being there one time when some guy rode his bicycle right through the middle of the game. Jinx walks over and grabs him, and says, “Get out of here, and he says, What are you going to do about it?” She grabbed him, threw him down, grabbed him by the neck and put her fist in his face, and said, “This is what I’m going to do about it,” and he got up and left and of course it was over.
