Cartier: First of all, I really, really want to just briefly, do a shout out to the Mazer and how much this place has meant to me and how much this has space has meant to me and how, in a very real way, I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have done this dissertation without the Mazer. In Los Angeles, I took a class with Dr. Lillian Faderman.

Cartier: [laughs] And, once she brought us on a field trip to the Mazer. I’ll never forget a lot of things about that. I’ll never forget how beautiful she was and the way her nylons made a sound when she walked.
[laughter]
Cartier: I think it’s very instructive and important that in 1989 I actually came on a field trip here and I knew that there was a place that wanted this stuff. And I came back here, I started donating stuff here. Some of you are familiar with the Dandelion Warrior Project that I started. All of those papers are collected here. Morgasm, the museum of radical gender and sex matrix, another project that I did, that information is here. So through my whole career, I knew that there was a place that wanted this. And I think that’s really different than somebody who is doing this stuff, in a doctoral program who didn’t know this kind of place existed and couldn’t actually get here. There’s only two places in the country that collect, specifically, lesbian material and that’s the June Mazer Lesbian Archives— it’s not that we just collect, we, um, I’m on the advisory board— that we just collect lesbian material but material that’s created by a lesbian, connected to a lesbian somehow, and, the Lesbian Herstory Archives in New York which was specifically created by Joan Nestle to collect, our culture. Memorabilia in the beginning because she felt that was being lost. So, I thank the Mazer and thank you for all the love and support you’ve given this book.
